8 Basic Instructions For Proper Nursing Management of Mechanical Ventilator Patients
There are 8 basic steps of nursing management of ventilator-dependent patients:
1- Ventilator Patient Assessment & Monitoring:
Regular monitoring of the patient’s respiratory status, vital signs, and distress level is crucial. All readings must be properly noted on a chart/paper, which must be available beside the bed of the patient at all times.
2- Ventilator Circuit Management
Filters and tubing of the ventilator must be checked regularly to make sure they are functioning properly.
3- Airway Management & Suction
The patient’s airway must be maintained for smooth breathing, and regular sterile suctioning should be performed.
4- Medication Administration
Regular medications (sedatives, bronchodilators, and others) must be administered on time, as suggested by physician of the patient.
5- Infection Prevention
Strict hand hygiene should be maintained. All equipment must be properly sterilized. Disinfectants must be used regularly in the ventilator facility.
6- Nutritional Support
According to the condition of a ventilator patient, nurses must manage parenteral or enteral feeding for the fast recovery of the patient.
7- Mobility & Skin Integrity
Nurses should regularly reposition the ventilator patient to prevent bedsores or pressure ulcers.
8- Patient & Family Education
Nurses should educate residents and family members on basic patient care, how to check status, and what to do in case of any emergency.
